Miriam's Story
I know this pull toward African fabric. I have felt it my whole life.
I grew up in Nigeria, making trips to the open-air markets of Lagos with my mother. The bolts of wax print, the indigo, the colour and noise and life of those markets — that is where my love of African textiles was born. Long before I ever picked up a quilting needle.
By training I am an architect. When I made my first quilt in 2016, I used only African fabrics — Ankara, Adire, wax prints from the markets I had visited all my life. When I shared it online, the response surprised me. Quilters across the world were hungry for exactly this: African fabrics, African stories, an African voice in a space that had rarely heard one.
I built Quilt Africa Fabrics to change that. And the Block of the Month — Echoes of Heritage — is a reflection of that. Twelve silhouettes. Twelve stories from across the continent. Twelve months of making something that carries all of it forward.

When does the Echoes of Heritage BOM officially start?
Your 12-month journey begins the moment you enroll! You will get immediate access to the welcome materials and the beautiful first modules we have already released. Once you dive into those, a brand new module will be unlocked for you on the 1st of every month moving forward.
I see the BOM started in January. Am I too far behind to join now?
Absolutely not! There is no such thing as being "behind" in our community. That is exactly why we've opened this last-quarter intake. While our first wave of quilters began in January, your personal 12-month membership begins the day you enroll. You are stepping in at the perfect time to build your body of creative work.
How do I catch up with the patterns that have already been released?
The beauty of this program is that you are in complete control of your pace.
When you join today, you will immediately unlock the welcome packet and the teaching videos for the previous months.
You can choose to have a fun, binge-sewing weekend to do a few blocks at once, or simply take a deep breath and work through them slowly. There is no rush, and the materials will be there whenever you are ready.
Will I feel left out of the community since others started earlier?

Our private group is a vibrant, welcoming family. Because life happens, you will find members sharing their blocks at all different stages—some are just finishing Block 1, while others are further along!

What is included in the monthly delivery?
Every month, you receive a downloadable PDF pattern with full-size templates, a teaching video, and a cultural story guide. We meet live for the Reveal, where we walk through the block and the story behind the silhouette, and again for Show & Tell, where members share what they've made.
What is the recommended skill level for this BOM?
This BOM is designed for Confident Beginners and up. If you have basic rotary cutting, sewing, and pressing skills, you are ready! We use fusible appliqué, which is a beginner-friendly technique, and the included video tutorials offer clear, step-by-step guidance.
How do I access my monthly patterns and videos?
You will access everything through a dedicated, password-protected membership portal on the Quilt Africa website.
What is the difference between the Annual and Quarterly plans?
The Quarterly Plan ($45) covers October, November and December: the live sessions, lifetime access to the whole Echoes of Heritage library, and 15% off your next fabric order until December 31.
The Annual Plan ($180) includes all of that, and carries you straight on into our 2027 Block of the Month, for 12 months from the day you join. It also includes a free surprise bundle of African print fabric (free shipping in the US; shipping is added for other countries).
What if I fall behind?
No problem! Join in October and you keep lifetime access to the whole Echoes of Heritage library — every pattern, video and story guide. This is a journey, not a race. Work at your own pace.
What is the finished size of the Echoes of Heritage quilt?
The final quilt finishes at approximately 36" x 48"— a perfect throw size to display the stunning African-rooted designs in your modern home. (With more blocks, sashing and borders you can make it bigger if you like).
What materials do I need to participate?
You will need basic sewing supplies (sewing machine, thread, scissors, rotary cutter, ruler, etc.), as well as background fabric, appliqué fabrics, fusible web, and batting/backing to finish. Your plan covers the digital patterns and video instruction. Fabric is sold separately in our online shop — and your 15% code applies until December 31.
When does joining close?
Joining Echoes of Heritage closes on October 31 at midnight EST. After that, our 2027 Block of the Month opens on December 13.
What happens after December?
Echoes of Heritage finishes in December, and our 2027 Block of the Month begins in January.
If you're on the Annual plan, you carry straight on.
If you're on the Quarterly plan, you can join it when it opens on December 13 — and you keep your lifetime access to the Echoes library either way.
Is this machine appliqué or hand appliqué?
We focus primarily on machine appliqué using fusible web for the clean, modern look of the silhouettes. Instructions for finishing the edges using your machine are included in the masterclass.
What fabric and supplies will I need?
For the whole quilt you'll need about 2 yards of solid black for the silhouettes, 12 fat quarters of African wax print, Adire or batik for the backgrounds and accents, and about 2½ yards of a light solid (white, cream, light grey or pale sand) for the negative space.
You'll also need 3–4 yards of lightweight paper-backed fusible web, black thread for the silhouette edges, and a neutral thread for piecing. An open-toe or appliqué foot on your machine makes the edges much easier. Your welcome packet has the full list.
