❌ You love bold, vibrant African fabrics — but you have never found a pattern that feels worthy of them. Something modern, clean, and genuinely striking.
😔You are tired of making the same quilts. You want to make something that has cultural depth and creative ambition — but you are not sure where to begin.
👀 You have a growing collection of African fabric bundles. Beautiful ones. And they are sitting in a cupboard because no project has felt meaningful enough to start.
💭 You want to make a quilt that carries a real story. Something your children or grandchildren will hold one day and understand where it came from.
I grew up in Nigeria, making trips to the open-air markets of Lagos with my mother. The bolts of wax print, the indigo, the colour and noise and life of those markets — that is where my love of African textiles was born. Long before I ever picked up a quilting needle.
By training I am an architect. When I made my first quilt in 2016, I used only African fabrics — Ankara, Adire, wax prints from the markets I had visited all my life. When I shared it online, the response surprised me. Quilters across the world were hungry for exactly this: African fabrics, African stories, an African voice in a space that had rarely heard one.
I built Quilt Africa Fabrics to change that. And the Block of the Month — Echoes of Heritage — is a reflection of that. Twelve silhouettes. Twelve stories from across the continent. Twelve months of making something that carries all of it forward.
I would love for you to be part of it.

Our community celebrates every finish, whether it is Block 1 or Block 9. Members who joined in January are still working on early blocks. You will not feel behind — because in this community, there is no such thing.
Remember that you can create your quilt in any of our available colour ways - purple, blue, red, green, yellow or pink!

Earthy Contrast: Deep Teal, Burnt Orange, Mustard Yellow, Rich Brown African prints/solids.

Judie is the Quilter in Residence at Quilt Africa Fabrics and the heart of the Block of the Month programme. Every month, she guides the community through the block — teaching the appliqué technique, walking through the cultural story behind the silhouette, and leading the show-and-tell where members share their work.
Judie brings warmth, skill, and patience to every session. She meets you where you are — whether this is your first quilt or your fiftieth.
Every month, you will receive everything you need to build your Echoes of Heritage quilt, seamlessly blending profound cultural story with clean, modern design:
12 Exclusive Appliqué Templates:
Precise, full-size templates for the 12 powerful silhouettes (The Stool, The Baobab, The Matriarch, and more), ready for printing and cutting.
12 Cultural Story Guides:
Each month we will be sharing the history, proverbs, and meaning behind each silhouette, so you stitch with profound purpose and knowledge.
Modern Piecing Instructions:
Instructions for the unique, modern background of each 12-inch block (Curves, Negative Space, and High Contrasting Colour).
Achieve Graphic, High-Impact Design:
You will learn to use intentional High Contrast—placing stark silhouettes against vibrant, geometric backgrounds—to create a visually sharp, smart design that immediately commands attention.
Master the Art of Meaningful Abstraction:
We move beyond simple patterns. This project teaches intentional design, using geometric shapes and controlled color placement to ensure every stitch supports the central narrative of heritage and resilience.
Elevate Your Craft with Technical Confidence:
You'll build confidence over 12 months by conquering every essential appliqué technique, resulting in clean lines, perfect curves, and a level of technical sophistication that turns a pattern into true textile art.

This BOM is designed for Confident Beginners and up. If you have basic rotary cutting, sewing, and pressing skills, you are ready! We use fusible appliqué, which is a beginner-friendly technique, and the included video tutorials offer clear, step-by-step guidance.
You will access everything through a dedicated, password-protected membership portal on the Quilt Africa website.
The Annual Plan ($180) gives you access to all 12 modules and includes the Quick-Action Bonus of a free, delivered to your door Surprise Bundle.
The Quarterly Plan ($45) charges you every three months.
The Monthly Plan ($15) is pay-as-you-go.
No problem! Once you sign up, you have access to the pattern and video lessons for as long as your membership is active. This is a journey, not a race. You can work at your own pace.
The final quilt finishes at approximately 36" x 48"— a perfect throw size to display the stunning African-rooted designs in your modern home. (With more blocks, sashing and borders you can make it bigger if you like).
You will need basic sewing supplies (sewing machine, thread, scissors, rotary cutter, ruler, etc.), as well as background fabric, appliqué fabrics, fusible web, and batting/backing to finish. The monthly plan covers the digital pattern and video instruction, but fabric is sold separately in our online shop.
We focus primarily on machine appliqué using fusible web for the clean, modern look of the silhouettes. Instructions for finishing the edges using your machine are included in the masterclass.
Every block in Echoes of Heritage carries a piece of this continent forward.
Twelve months from now, you will have made something that tells a real story — in African fabric, in your hands, in your home.
I cannot wait to make it with you.
With love from the continent,
Miriam 💚🌍
